The EU dairy sector has been characterised by several years of rapidly changing markets and high levels of volatility. While the long-term development prospects, particularly in global markets, are positive, the sector faces challenges of resilience and market turmoil. Recent debates held in the European Parliament underlined once more the demand for fresh ideas, as well as the challenge to transform political will into consensual proposals which can be supported by a majority.

EU-Mercosur FTA: what is at stake?

The EU-MERCOSUR Free Trade negotiations were launched by the end of 1995, more than 20 years ago. The stop and go pattern reached a high go point in 2004 when both the EU and the then 4 Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) got very close to concluding the deal.
