TTIP: challenges and negotiation strategy for EU agriculture

Public debate and recommendations organised by Farm Europe, under the patronage of Mr Paolo De Castro, Member of the European Parliament, S&D political coordinator for agriculture and rural development and Member of the EP delegation for relations with the US

The resilience of the milk sector

The EU dairy sector has been characterised by several years of rapidly changing markets and high levels of volatility. While the long-term development prospects, particularly in global markets, are positive, the sector faces challenges of resilience and market turmoil. Recent debates held in the European Parliament underlined once more the demand for fresh ideas, as well as the challenge to transform political will into consensual proposals which can be supported by a majority.

Internal working group on TTIP

Following Farm Europe’s debate on trade negotiations, held on the 9th of June, and the latest developments in the United States concerning the Trans Pacific Partnership, which pave the way for an acceleration of the EU/US negotiations in the second half of 2015, Farm Europe has organised an internal working group which will focus on TTIP in order to more thoroughly analyse the offensive and defensive interests for the EU agri-food sector.

Trade: what is at stake for EU agriculture and food sectors

Launch event of Farm Europe’s working group on trade issues.

15h00-16h00

Discussion with Mr. Jean Luc DEMARTY, Director General of DG TRADE (EU Commission) on the on going negotiations – opportunities and challenges for EU agriculture and food sector.

16h15 – 18h00

Focus on TTIP with Mr. Jim GRUEFF, managing partner at Decision Leaders, former lead negotiator of US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Mr. Joao PACHECO.

TTIP’s expected level of ambition has surpassed anything achieved so far, setting the pace for further trade deals and hopefully prodding other countries to move forward with stalled WTO negotiations. TTIP’s impact on the agriculture and food sector could be large, larger than any other free trade deal negotiated so far, and larger than what was expected out of the WTO Doha round (with the exception of domestic subsidies).

Promoting EU agricultural products: an ambition whose time has come

10h00-12h00

“Promoting EU agricultural products:  an ambition whose time has come”, with Mr. Diego CANGA FANO, Multilateral relations and quality policy Director at DG AGRI (European Commission)

The reform of the  policy on promotion of agri-food products is intended to symbolise a Europe that is not afraid to be ambitious for its food sector and that aims to contribute to global food supply through its exports. The impact of this new tool will depend on the adequacy of the strategy currently being drawn up by the European Commission, on how easy programmes will be to implement and on the capacity of  stakeholders to access the funding available with effective campaigns.

Launch debate with Joost Korte

Launch debate with Mr. Joost KORTE, deputy director general of DG AGRI on the 29th of April 2015 from 11h30 to 13h00 at the premises of Farm Europe, Rond-Point Schuman, 9, in Brussels.

Mr. Korte will share with us his vision for the future of the farming sector, identify underlying trends
and key topics to stimulate the debate on the agricultural policy of the European Union.
