Introduction

Farm Europe, with the support of Avril, is organising a high-level event bringing together European policymakers, industry representatives, transport operators and agricultural stakeholders to discuss the role of agriculture in strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy.

At a decisive moment for Europe’s energy and transport policies, the event will explore how European agriculture and sustainable agricultural fuels can contribute to decarbonising transport while strengthening the European Union’s energy and protein sovereignty.

Context: A pivotal moment for the European regulatory agenda

The European Union still imports more than half of the energy it consumes. This dependence on fossil fuels weighs not only on energy bills and purchasing power, the trade balance and farmers’ incomes, but also on Europe’s strategic sovereignty.

Part of the solution to this energy challenge is already being produced in Europe. Agricultural biofuels are available and can be deployed today to reduce transport emissions while strengthening the EU’s energy and protein sovereignty. By creating new outlets for European agricultural production, they can also contribute to the resilience of European value chains and reduce strategic dependencies.

The European Commission recognised this potential in its April 2026 AccelerateEU communication, identifying sustainable biofuels as a decarbonisation lever that needs to be mobilised.

The coming months will be decisive for the European regulatory framework. The revision of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), guidelines on intermediate crops, ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime will help determine the role of agriculture in Europe’s energy and climate policies over the next decade and beyond 2030.

It is against this backdrop, as the European institutions resume their work, that Farm Europe, with the support of Avril, is bringing together policymakers, agricultural stakeholders, industry representatives and transport operators to examine how European agriculture and sustainable agricultural fuels can contribute to decarbonising transport while strengthening Europe’s food, feed and energy strategic autonomy.

Preliminary agenda

The event will feature high-level discussions and exchanges on the following topics:

  • Opening session
  • Panel 1: Road transport and energy sovereignty
  • Panel 2: Aviation and maritime transport
  • Closing remarks – Christophe Hansen, EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Food

The detailed programme and list of speakers will be announced in due course.
